Meet
the Staff

Vivian W. Freer DVM (Bibi)
Bibi Freer earned her
DVM from North Carolina
State University in 1988.
She did her internship
at Apex Equine Hospital,
a full service facility
outside Raleigh, with
an emphasis on lameness
and reproduction. In 1990
Bibi moved to Columbus,
NC, and founded Bonnie
Brae Veterinary Hospital,
drawing on her Scottish
heritage for a name meaning
"beautiful hillside."
Over the years Bonnie
Brae took on partners,
added a small-animal side,
and expanded its equine
practice to a premier
regional medical and surgical
referral facility.

Bibi
left Bonnie Brae in 2005
to create a simpler, more
personal business that
allows her more time for
her family: Freer Equine,
a mobile equine practice
combining expert care
and state-of-art equipment
delivered to the farm.
Services include routine
care, pre-purchase exams,
lameness evaluations,
emergency care, an equine
wellness program and –
Bibi’s favorite – reproductive
services.
Although Bibi was born
into a non-horsey family,
“horse” was reportedly
her very first word. She
spent much of her childhood
at Bone’s Stable in Rocky
Mount, NC, where she boarded
a variety of “backyard”
horses. One of her finds
was a $300 Saddlebred
filly that she ultimately
rode to the NC State Championship.
Bibi ran the Warren Wilson
College riding program
while earning an undergraduate
degree there, and then
galloped racehorses for
Hall of Fame Trainer Charlie
Whittingham at Santa Anita,
California, for two years.
She has also shown hunters,
foxhunted Bibi now enjoys
trail riding and helps
some Montana friends with
their annual Spring round-up
of ranch horses from thousands
of acres of winter pasture.

Stephanie Fier, Administration
Stephanie Fier wears many
hats at Freer Equine, from
scheduling, record-keeping
and accounting to “whatever
else Bibi needs me to do.”
Stephanie has been with
the practice since it was
started and previously worked
with Bibi for two years
at Bonnie Brae Veterinary
Clinic in Tryon.
A daughter, Taylor 15, and
son, Drew 11, keep Stephanie
and her husband busy enough
with sports and other interests
that Stephanie’s current
off-duty horse activities
are confined to caring for
her mom’s three miniatures.
